What to expect in therapy
There are many different approaches in counselling.Below is an overview of what to expect when starting therapy with me.
I practice the person-centred approach with clients 18+ and it is my role to help you through the counselling process without judgement or telling you what to do.
First session
Beginning therapy sessions
The first session is a chance to meet me and find out if my approach is for you. I will ask some questions about how you've been feeling. Together, we can work out what you want to get out of counselling. You might decide to have just a few sessions or more long-term therapy. Either way, I can see you face to face or online.
After the first session, therapy happens in your way and at your pace. Coming to therapy gives you time to explore your thoughts and feelings and discover what is important to you. Together, we will examine the impact of past experiences on you and explore your relationships—with yourself and others.
What you want out of therapy
As therapy progresses, you will gain a greater understanding of your issues. It is important to me to listen with compassion and empathy so you feel understood and find greater self-acceptance. You may want to set goals to work towards or talk about what comes up in session each week - I am led by you.
Making changes
Therapy is a demanding process; changing familiar patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaivour can be challenging. I may give you information or offer suggestions but I won't tell you what to do. By engaging in this process, you'll begin to trust yourself and feel empowered to make changes in your life.
